I hope your holidays are full of peaceful reflection and quality time with loved ones. Maybe a little eggnog too. As a husband, full time Realtor and investor, the holiday season marks a shift in day to day tasks (like many of you). We've got gift shopping, decorating, hosting and annual deadlines (and then taxes!) on the brain...Most people aren't thinking about the large expensive asset in which they dwell, however the cooler temperatures and falling leaves remind me to 'winterize' my home. It is important to remember that one of the easiest ways to add value to your home is to simply maintain it well! Cleaning it helps too!
Cutting any vegetation off the home, cleaning out gutters and insulating exterior plumbing are just a few inexpensive (or free) ways you can prevent costly repairs. Clogged gutters and encroaching vegetation are one of the biggest threats of water intrusion in a home. It is heartbreaking to see a client's home in need of thousands of dollars of exterior maintenance that could be avoided by simple semi-annual maintenance. More chores you say? Are you maxed out on obligations already? That's ok too! PRO TIP: Many contractors who primarily work outside (carpenters, landscaping, painters, etc) often have more availability in the winter, which means while you're wrapping presents or hanging under the mistletoe, you can have a professional contractor handle it for you at a competitive rate. You will enjoy the fruits of the maintenance for years to come, or perhaps when we go to sell your home! If you are thinking of making a move in the next couple years, the maintenance you handle now will directly benefit you then!
